I love using these texts that celebrate women, during women’s history month. I have a group of only girls in my 5th grade ELL group this year. They loved reading about these strong, influential women from a variety of cultures! (Not just women from the U. S.) The stories are great vocabulary builders and provide a great deal of background knowledge for students. When students are finished reading the selected texts, I plan on having students choose one person they feel is the most influential female, and write their opinion on the topic, (the most influential female) supporting it with details and reasons from the text.
The stories have also been a great conversation pieces, since my students come from different cultures. If your students are not from various cultures, they still provide opportunities to discuss other cultures and beliefs. These stories empower girls, showing them examples of how women can make a substantial contribution to society.

This is a great resource for my high achieving second graders! I love that it has so many different reading passages to choose from and the variety of comprehension questions that are included as well (multiple choice, short response, etc).
